When a new building or renovation goes up, the cabling in the walls gets a fraction of the attention the visible technology does. It shouldn't. Long after today's laptops, switches, and access points have been replaced two or three times over, the cabling behind the drywall will still be there, carrying everything.
That's the quiet truth of structured cabling: it's the longest-lived part of your infrastructure and one of the smallest slices of a construction budget, yet a bad decision here is the most expensive to undo. Everything else you can swap out on a Friday. This you can't.
Cabling outlives everything plugged into it
Active gear runs on a refresh cycle: servers every few years, switches and access points a bit longer, endpoints constantly. The cabling doesn't. A quality structured cabling system stays in the walls for decades while generations of equipment come and go around it. It's often cited as roughly 5% of a project's technology budget and the single component the building lives with the longest, which is exactly why cutting corners on it to save a rounding error is such a poor trade.
“Good enough for today” ages badly
The temptation is to spec cabling for current needs. But you're not wiring for today's devices. You're wiring for whatever hangs off that cable for the next fifteen or twenty years. Two forces make yesterday's minimum a liability:
- Wireless keeps getting hungrier. Every access point is only as good as the wire feeding it. Industry guidance now recommends running at least Category 6A cabling to wireless access points, because modern Wi-Fi needs multi-gigabit backhaul that older cable can't reliably deliver.
- Power is moving over the same cables. Power over Ethernet now runs phones, cameras, access points, lighting, and door hardware, at far higher wattages than before. That power generates heat in the bundle, and higher-grade cable like Cat 6A is built to dissipate it where thinner, older cable can struggle.
Wire a building to the minimum and you can find yourself pulling new cable through occupied ceilings a decade early: the most disruptive, expensive way to do it.
The part nobody sees until it fails
Cabling problems are invisible right up until they aren't: the intermittent connection no one can explain, the access point that won't hit full speed, the camera that keeps dropping. Because it's hidden in the walls, it's the last thing anyone suspects and the hardest thing to fix after the fact. Done right (certified, labeled, documented), it simply disappears and works for twenty years. Done wrong, it's a tax you pay on every future project.
